2019 Florida Scrub-Jay Translocation

In 2019, Florida Scrub-Jays were translocated from Ocala National Forest to Seminole State Forest and Rock Springs Preserve. Florida scrub-jays are non-migratory and have difficulty dispersing long distances when their habitat is fragmented. Translocation – the human-assisted movement of wild animals from one location to another – is a strategy used to improve population sizes, increase connectivity among populations, and preserve genetic diversity.

2017-2018 Translocation Project

For this translocation project, the team relocated nine Florida scrub-jays from Ocala National Forest to Seminole State Forest, more than 20 miles away. The conservation goal is to transport – or “translocate” – birds from a stable population in the Ocala National Forest to smaller populations where extensive habitat has been restored but has not yet been discovered by Florida scrub-jays.
